Cerebral cortex

The cerebral cortex, also known as the cerebral mantle, is the outer layer of neural tissue of the cerebrum of the brain in humans and other mammals. It is the largest site of neural integration in the central nervous system, and plays a key role in attention, perception, awareness, thought, memory, language, and consciousness.

The cerebral cortex is folded into peaks called gyri and grooves called sulci, a structure that increases surface area within the cranium. In humans, about two-thirds of the cortical surface is buried in sulci. The cortex is divided into left and right hemispheres by the longitudinal fissure, joined beneath by the corpus callosum. The six-layered neocortex makes up approximately 90% of the cortex, with the allocortex comprising the remainder. Cortical folding, or gyrification, appears during fetal development and continues after birth; in small mammals with small brains, the cortex is smooth.
